The Bike Recycling Program was started in 2000 by Bike Athens [http://www.bikeathens.com/]. Bike Athens promotes biking, walking and public transportation in the Athens-Clark County Area. The organization works to put in bike routes and bike lanes in the city and promote cycling and they have certainly succeeded. Buses are equipped with bike racks, there are a multitude of places to lock up bicycles throughout downtown Athens and cycling appears to be really popular among locals as well as the University of Georgia community. The Bike Recycling Program gives more people access to sustainable transportation. The Bike Recycling Program, which is located just north of downtown Athens, is run by a couple of committed volunteers and a team of behind the scenes people at Bike Athens. The program was originally established to fix up and re-distribute bikes to the poor community in the area. Around Christmas time the organization gives away more than three hundred bikes to children.

History

The BikeAthens BRP began in 2001 as a small group of friends in a garage, fixing bikes for the homeless in Athens. Over the years we worked out of a storage unit and then warehouse space in the Chase Park Warehouses on Tracy Street, and in 2016 we moved to 1075 W. Broad St. Thousands of volunteers have passed through the shop, most of whom started as novices and left with at least a few bike repair skills. In 2008 we added a third weekly 2.5 hour work session, and in 2012 we added a women-only work session.

In 2022, we received a grant from REI to purchase a retired FedEx van to bring a mobile shop to more places and events.

In 2023, after our lease on W. Broad St. ended, we moved to our current shop at 1190 Prince Ave.

Services Offered

  • Bike donations to local social service agencies, each with a helmet, lights and a lock
  • Bike, parts and accessory sales at the shop
  • Sliding-scale walk-in repairs
  • Holiday Bikes for Kids: bike donations to children served by local support agencies
  • Fix Your Own Bike night on Thursdays, open to the public
