In the meantime, Susanna tried to secure the space recently left open by the eviction of a MMA (mixed martial arts) group in the Bloomfield Centre, while other BAers tried to get out stuff out. A schism between Bike Againers and Bike Againsters (self named, and I’m not making this up) formed, and the Bike Against crowd decided to take the stands and tools and some bikes and start a new shop (by the time I was on the scene, this second group had dissolved). The minutes from this meeting are still in BA somewhere in a leather bound book, I seem to remember the vote going in favour of trying to work things out with the city, but there was a lot of distrust of the city at this point. The city had evicted all the tenants of Bloomfield before, I'm not sure if it happened while BA was already locked out for the fire code reason. BA was one of the 8 groups, of the original 56, to move back into the Bloomfield Centre, or in our case, move our stuff from one room to another.Susanna was successful, and in Jan/Feb of 2007 a few remaining BA folk moved the shop from the boiler room storage room to the former dojo, >1000sqft (sweet!). In 2014 we moved to 6050 Almon Street next to the tool library. In 2018 we moved to our current location, 5664 Charles Street.

History

Bike Again was started by Susanna Fuller and others in 2000, as a women only bike repair shop. I heard it was in the Brunswick Street Church. I've seen old photos of 18ish year old Susanna and Sonya working on bikes in a cramped, dark space. At some point, they moved to Bloomfield Centre, and were given a space in the storage room of the boiler room (super sketchy) for $0 a month. It was about 20x40', with 2 fluorescent lights and one window 8' off the ground. It smelled of furnace oil, and had no other door than into the boiler room. The fire chief or someone similar came in one day and proclaimed that you're not allowed to work in a room with no fire exit, and halted operations (spring or summer of 2006).
