GUIDELINES FOR USING ZOOM

  • Mute yourself when not speaking to minimize background noise.
  • Slow down! Take a breath after each sentence and pause when switching speakers.
  • Speak up! Speak loud and clear. Use headphones and a microphone if you have them.
  • Use the "raise hand" reaction and wait for the facilitator to call you. Don't speak over other people.
  • Say your name before speaking so people listening to the interpreter know who is talking.
  • Please do NOT use chat except for brief messages like "can't hear you" or "slow down", or to paste links. For text-based conversation, you can sign on to Discord, which has automatic translation between English and Spanish.
  • After simultaneous interpretation is enabled: Unless you are bilingual, please click the "Interpretation" button at the bottom of the window and select your language to ensure you can hear the interpreters.
  • Please edit your screenname to include your language preference - ENG for English, SP for Spanish, or B for bilingual, so interpreters know what is needed.

Interpretation function instructions

This event will be held in Spanish and English. Both languages will be actively used; if you are not comfortable communicating in both, select the language channel of your preference by following the instructions for the interpretation function.

  • click globe icon on the bottom of the screen or “language interpretation”
  • if you’re using a tablet or phone, click on “more” and click on “language interpretation" then choose your language channel
  • it is important to select “done” otherwise the function will not select your preference
  • you can click “mute original audio” to mute the original speaker; otherwise, you will hear the voice of the interpreter and the original speaker at the same time.
  • people who are comfortable in both Spanish and English can keep the interpreting function off, or choose a language channel but please only speak that language.

Language Justice & Signals

Language justice is a shared responsibility among all of us. Here’s what you can do to help communication. Feel free to use these yourself. If you see someone making a these hand gestures please repeat it, horizontally <> means we are asking the speaker to slow down or we might use a turtle reaction, a gesture vertically ^^ upwards or a megaphone reaction is us asking to speaker to raise their volume, and a gesture with one hand or a stop is for only one person to speak at a time. It’s impossible to interpret more than one speaker at a time. These gestures are not only for interpreters but for all to support communication.
