History

Sharing Wheels Community Bike Shop was founded in 2002, and operated monthly bike repair events at the Everett Gospel Mission. In 2016, the organization hired their first paid staff, and in 2019 hired an executive director. Over those years, the organization operated under the mission "Connecting unused bikes to people who need wheels." That mission statement was updated to "Keeping People and Bikes Moving" in 2019.

As of 2026, the organization employs eight staff members, including an Executive Director, Shop & Programs Manager, Youth Bike Club Program Manager, 2 Youth Instructors, Marketing Manager, and 2 Shop Mechanics. The organization's programs are also supported by a cadre of volunteers, including an all-volunteer board of directors. The organization has a longstanding partnership with Sno-Isle libraries, which is a large supporter of the Mobile Bicycle Repair program.

Services Offered

The Sharing Wheels Community Bike Shop

This program seeks to provide affordable and sustainable transportation options to individuals and families in Snohomish County through the sale of safe and reliable used bikes, and the supplies needed to support riders on a tight budget.

Target Populations: Individuals and families of all ages and income levels in Snohomish County who are seeking affordable transportation, recreational riding options, or a sustainable alternative to car ownership.

Program Activities:

• Used Bicycle Recycling: We accept donated bicycles, diverting them from landfills and giving them a second chance to serve the community. Bikes are assessed for their condition and either refurbished for sale or responsibly recycled for parts.
• Refurbished Bike Sales: Our shop offers a wide selection of refurbished bikes at affordable prices. Each bike undergoes a thorough inspection and tune-up by our skilled mechanics to ensure safety and reliability. To keep things equitable we offer sliding scale pricing as well as bike vouchers through our Community Bikes program.
• New & Used Bike Parts/Accessories: We sell functional used bike parts such as wheels, cranks, derailleurs, brake parts and bolts galore. We also have accessories such as fenders, bike bags, bike racks, and car racks. To help with bike repairs, we also sell new parts such as cables, bike chains, tubes and brake pads. Parts are priced based on quality and condition. If someone can’t afford to pay for parts and/or labor, they are able to volunteer through our Work 4 Wheels program

Community Bikes & Accessories

This program seeks to increase cyclist safety, legality, and self-reliance through distributing safe, reliable bikes to adults along with free helmets, locks, lights, patch kits, and multitools.

Target Populations: Low-to-no income individuals and families in Snohomish County.

Program Activities:

• Community Bike Vouchers: We offer vouchers toward a bike from our Community Bike Shop inventory. Vouchers are distributed to nonprofit partners over the course of the year as we have bikes available. Walk-in customers who need a free bike are directed to one of our partners for a voucher or can participate in our Work 4 Wheels program. Community bikes are sourced from the refurbishment of donated and recycled bikes by volunteers and checked for safety and quality by a staff mechanic.
• Work 4 Wheels: Work for Wheels allows people to volunteer time at the Sharing Wheels shop and DIY repair center in exchange for credit towards labor on repairs, used parts/accessories or a bike (up to $250). Time is valued at the current minimum wage. This program is intended for low/no income individuals who cannot otherwise afford to purchase a bike or parts without financial assistance but do not wish to work through a partner.
• Dark Nights Bright Lights: In early 2017, Sharing Wheels began offering basic safety lights to low income people who did not have legally required bike lighting. In addition to being a safety issue, some customers get stopped by police for not having lights. We install a high quality light set on the client bike free of charge. Individual donors have helped support the cost of this program.

DIY Repair Center

This program seeks to empower cyclists and promote sustainable bike ownership through providing a welcoming space, comprehensive resources, and expert guidance for individuals to perform their own bicycle maintenance and repairs, all at low cost.

Target Populations: Cyclists of all ages and skill levels in Snohomish County, with a particular focus on those who may not have access to traditional bike shops, rely on their bike for basic needs, or prefer a hands-on approach.

Program Activities:

• DIY Repair Area: The heart of the program, offering free access to work stands, tools, and a wide selection of new and used parts at affordable prices. Knowledgeable volunteers are available to offer guidance and assistance, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
• Professional & Fleet Repairs: Low-cost professional repair services are available for complex issues or those who prefer expert assistance. Fleet repair and maintenance services are also offered to external programs and facilities.
• Low-Cost Part: A wide variety of new and used parts are available at affordable prices, sourced through recycling efforts, donations, and partnerships with suppliers.
• Mechanical Classes & Rider Education: We offer classes designed to equip riders with the skills they need to live safely and happily with a bike.

• The City of Everett granted $20,000 through Everett Forward in 2023.
• The Tulalip Tribes granted $2,000 in 2024.

Kids Bike Giveaways

This program seeks to give all children access to bicycles through the refurbishment and distribution of donated youth bikes.

Target Populations: Low/no-income children, youth, and families in Snohomish County

Program Activities:

• Christmas House Kids Bike Giveaway: Each fall, Sharing Wheels volunteers repair children’s bicycles for the holidays. From October to December we host volunteer work parties to get 100+ bikes refurbished and donated to Christmas House. The cost of new parts was covered by a grant from Stillaguamish Tribe. Snacks, drinks and dessert cakes (donated from Nothing Bundt Cake) were provided to all the volunteers. All bikes are stored in donated or low-cost spaces. Helmets are provided with each bike, fulfilled by our Christmas House.
• Summer Kids Bike Giveaway: Similar to Christmas House, kids bikes are refurbished at work parties and distributed directly to low/no income families and to our non-profit partners during the summer months.
• Kids Bike Swap: Sharing Wheels hosts a trade-in event where unneeded and non-functional child bikes are traded in for a credit on a working, safe bike. Sharing Wheels bikes are refurbished at work parties in advance of the event and then reviewed by a staff mechanic. Some of the bikes taken in can then be traded again and the rest are refurbished for future program activities. This event is promoted with a flyer and coupon at local schools which have large low-income populations.
• Direct Fulfillment: Sharing Wheels volunteers refurbish donated bikes and distribute them to local organizations throughout the year.

• Snohomish Kiwanis provided 100 helmets in 2024.
• Sno-Isle Food Coop & QFC provided gift cards for refreshments.
• Brooklyn Bros Pizza provided volunteer refreshments in 2025.

Mobile Bike Repair

This program seeks to keep people and their bikes moving through free mobile bike repair events throughout Snohomish county.

Target Populations: While all users are welcome, we intentionally target low-to-no-income individuals and families in Snohomish County, especially those without other affordable transportation.

Program Activities:

• WSU Repair Cafe: Sharing Wheels partners with WSU and SnoIsle libraries to provide bike (and mobility) repair at regular Repair Cafe events around the county. Repairs are provided by several volunteer mechanics who bring tools and portable bike stands from Sharing Wheels. Items that cannot be repaired on-site are referred to the Sharing Wheels shop for free DIY or low cost, paid service.
• Mobile Bike Repair: Similar to the repair cafe, Sharing Wheels volunteers host mobile bike repair events at city buildings, community events, and other places where folks can conveniently congregate. This year we are most often at the Evergreen, Mariner, and Lake Stevens Libraries.
• Event Bicycle Parking & Repair: Similar to the repair cafe, Sharing Wheels volunteers host a mobile bike repair and bike parking area at local events. Users can drop off bikes for safe-keeping and get any needed repairs handled while they browse, all free of charge.

Youth Bike Club

This program seeks to empower and educate youth riders through teaching the basics of cycling and maintenance to middle and (soon) highschool school students.

Target Populations: Title I middle and high school students in Everett.

Program Activities:

• Youth Bike Club: Students attend a weekly, after school program at Sharing Wheels where they experience hands-on learning both in-class and riding outdoors. In this club, students learn more about bikes and safe bike riding in our community as well as gain skills in bike maintenance, repair, and navigation. Upon completion of the program students take home a brand new bike, helmet and lock.
• Youth Bike Club (Summer): Students attend a weeklong summer program that mirrors the curriculum and outcomes of our after school program.
• YBC Alumni Events: YBC riders can attend social gatherings and rides to reinforce skills, build community, and share the joy of cycling. Events include rides to ice cream and YBC-only kid bike repair events.
