Services Offered
Bike Club
Cycles for Change operates Bike Clubs in four Oakland middle and high schools. Students embark on group rides throughout Oakland, learn basic bike mechanics, and get to take their bikes home at the end of the semester. Bike Club instills in our students a sense of ownership and agency over the streets of their neighborhoods, and develops their long term mobility as cyclists.
Bikery
The Bikery is community bike shop that opened in 2009. The Bikery offers sliding-scale and pro-bono bikes and repairs, facilitates high school internships, and is a hub for local youth to socialize and learn bike mechanics. The Bikery is home to Upcycle, our bike safety education and earn-a-bike program for low income adults, and Mariposx, our dedicated open shop hours and group ride series for people who are women, queer, trans, and femme.
More information about the Bikery is available on this wiki, or on the Bikery website here.
Bike Safety Programs
Our Safe Routes to Schools programs equip K-12 students across Alameda County with the skills and confidence to use bikes for healthy, sustainable, affordable & independent transportation. Each year, these commuter education programs reach over 6,700 students countywide, including about 1,300 first time riders.
Our educators travel to around 30 school sites and several community events annually with our fleet of bikes and helmets. Elementary school students enjoy a Bike Rodeo, riding around a mockup of city streets to practice fundamental skills. Middle and high school students learn to ride or practice safe riding and street skills, and embark on an off campus group ride.
Oakland Upcycle
Formerly known as Bike-Go-Round, Oakland Upcycle connects low-income East Bay residents with free bicycles each year. Participants get everything they need to start using the bicycle as their primary transportation— a lock, helmet, rack and other essentials, a personalized transportation plan, and urban riding training from Oakland Upcycle instructors.
Oakland Upcycle participants benefit from the efficient, reliable, zero-cost, flexible, and safe transportation provided by bicycles. Participants are equipped to reach jobs, services, and resources over a wide geographic range, and are empowered with the option of reaching these places during off-hours or away from major transit lines.
