Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles is a program of the Southside Community Center. We are a community bike program that has operated in Ithaca for nearly 20 years. RIBs accepts donations of unwanted bicycles, effectively rerouting them from landfills. Volunteers and RIBs staff refurbish the bicycles to good working condition and redistribute them to community members. RIBs provides Ithaca youth and adults alike with a safe, structured environment, where people of all ages can learn about bike repair and working cooperatively and constructively with others.

The two main programs offered at RIBs are RIBs Open-Shop and RIBs Hands-On Bicycle Maintenance and Repair Clinic. These programs provide opportunities to learn bicycle mechanics and safe riding skills. All of our programs are open to both youth and adults and require a sliding-scale nominal fee. However, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. We simply ask that you volunteer a set amount of time for the services you request.

Saturday 12-3
Tuesday 5-8

RIBs Open-Shop is a drop-in program that provides an opportunity to earn reconditioned bicycles, learn bicycle mechanics, or maintain already owned bicycles with knowledgeable assistance. The most important resource we offer our participants is a safe, structured but fun environment with a focus on cooperation. Participants and staff share technical knowledge and personal experience, building self esteem for youth and adults alike.

RIBs Hands-On Bicycle Maintenance & Repair Clinic

Thursday 6-8

The RIBs Hands-On Bicycle Maintenance & Repair Clinic is a series of classes and/or individual workshops which provide a hands-on educational opportunity, covering all the fundamentals of bicycle maintenance and repair. No previous knowledge is required or expected. Currently, there is no fee for the clinic. Clinics have several benefits. Graduates provide RIBs with more experienced volunteer help during Open-Shop. Knowledge gained from the clinics helps graduates become more self-sufficient cyclists.
==History==
The Bike Recycling Program was started in 2000 by Bike Athens [http://www.bikeathens.com/]. Bike Athens promotes biking, walking and public transportation in the Athens-Clark County Area. The organization works to put in bike routes and bike lanes in the city and promote cycling and they have certainly succeeded. Buses are equipped with bike racks, there are a multitude of places to lock up bicycles throughout downtown Athens and cycling appears to be really popular among locals as well as the University of Georgia community. The Bike Recycling Program gives more people access to sustainable transportation. The Bike Recycling Program, which is located just north of downtown Athens, is run by a couple of committed volunteers and a team of behind the scenes people at Bike Athens. The program was originally established to fix up and re-distribute bikes to the poor community in the area. Around Christmas time the organization gives away more than three hundred bikes to children.
The Ontario Wheelhouse is a community-pedaled organization that promotes bicycling within the City of Ontario and it's neighboring communities. The Wheelhouse offers an educational, safe and substance free workspace for cyclist from all rides of life to learn to use, service and love bicycles.

==History==
Pitzer College students founded the Ontario Wheelhouse (OWH) in the fall of 2010. The Wheelhouse
provides members of Ontario and surrounding communities with access to a bicycle repair shop where
they are able to work on and learn to work on their own bikes.
The Wheelhouse was crafted by Max Kaplan, Nate Riddle, Sylvie Froncek and Nicole
Scheunemann, with support from Lloyd and Garrison of Bumstead’s Bicycles and Director of Pitzer
in Ontario Prof Susan Phillips, with funding from Pitzer's EcoCenter, Green Bike Program and
Community Engagement Center. The OWH began as an attempt to counter the Inland Empires car
culture by encouraging people to use bikes, and by facilitating their maintenance for the Ontario
community.
==History==
The OWH began as an attempt to counter the Inland Empires car
culture by encouraging people to use bikes, and by facilitating their maintenance for the Ontario
community.
The Green Bike Program is a student-run organization created to promote cycling, bike safety and sustainability at The Claremont Colleges and the surrounding community. This is done through the reuse of old bikes and parts along with the organization of cycling events. The Green Bike Program gives community members free access to bicycles, tools, repair lessons.

==History==
Originally started in 2001 to test what effect the availability of bicycles would have on the Claremont College community, Pitzer College’s Green Bike Program is now a highly efficient and renowned staple of the Claremont Colleges. The program was started by three young men who decided to service ten bicycles and lend them out to members of the Pitzer College community in order to combat the Los Angeles car culture. Their hope was that, by making bicycles accessible and free, students and faculty would decrease car use. As it turned out, Pitzer community members who normally drove around the square mile enclosure of the campus were happy to replace gasoline with their own leg power and commute via bicycle. This positive reception promoted the expansion of the program. A space was set up in a dormitory basement where volunteers could repair the bicycles that were discarded by seniors after their last semester at college and then redistribute them to current students. A bi-annual bike raffle was implemented in order to fairly distribute free bicycles to interested students. As the program progressed the three volunteers and ten bicycles grew and the small workspace was upgraded.
In 2008, a fleet of approximately eighty “green bikes” and ten volunteers moved into a larger space, specifically designed for the program in the center of Pitzer’s campus. What began as an
experiment to counteract automobile use has turned into a student-run cooperative organization aimed at getting the community interested in bikes and promoting safe riding and knowledge of bicycle repair.

==Mission Statement==
