2nd Cycle is in an alley located betwixt S 10th and 11th street in the Hilltop, next to People's Park, and directly behind Le-Le's restaurant.

In May of 2008, four friends merged with dreams of bicycles and the excitement of one day running a community bicycle shop and since that day our dream has evolved into an ever expanding community shop. In the beginning, we had a portable bike stand, a small set of tools, and some milk crates full of parts that fit neatly into an unused garage at a friends house. During the next few months we worked feverishly repairing and refurbishing old bikes. As time passed and through numerous donations and benefits,our inventory grew considerably prompting the move to our current location near Peoples Park in the Hilltop district of Tacoma. As our operating location improved and through the continued support of friends and volunteers, we have been able to run a small community shop where we work to keep people on the road. At present, we provide the tools and workspace for people to wrench on their own peddle powered machines. We feel that by providing this service, community members are more able to enjoy and use their bicycle as a means of transportation while cutting maintenance cost and encouraging the acquisition of a new skill set. We maintain a small library for patrons to flip through as well as the free flowing dissemination of information from any of the fine volunteers. We also sell new brake pads, cables, a variety of different inner tubes as well as used parts and bicycles that would otherwise be headed for the waste stream. We do this at affordable prices to provide accessibility for the entire community. This is a space for the novice and the experienced to take bicycle maintenance into their own hands.

The Oberlin Bike Co-op is a cooperatively run bicycle repair, rental, and education center serving Oberlin, Ohio. The project began in 1986.

The goal of the Oberlin Bicycle Co-Op is to serve the needs of the overlapping communities of students and townspeople of Oberlin, Ohio. This is achieved through programming chosen by the elected presidents of the Cooperative towards the end of the Spring Semester. Historically such programming has included: bicycle safety rodeo, earn-a-bike programs with local youth, welding with youths, general bicycle repair, maintaining the rental fleet, organizing local rides, building floats for the Oberlin Big Parade and teaching other mechanics basic bicycle skills. The goals of the different programs have been met either through volunteer work or through the student run college courses known as ExCos.

Programming and leadership at the coop has historically been divided into two segments, the regular school year and the summer season. The Oberlin Bicycle Coop is a community oriented bicycle center, but it is also a student organization that is governed, in part, by the rules of the Oberlin College. Accordingly, at the end of the Spring Semester the membership (all of the volunteer) cast a ballot to elect the upcoming years presidents. Two members are elected president. Their responsibilities include overseeing programming for the upcoming year, fulfilling any requirements laid out in the Oberlin College Student Charter, organizing the repair schedule, organizing the shop layout and renovations, managing and purchasing inventory, financial accounting and electing the summer season staff. The title of president is not a paid position.

The person elected to oversee summer programming is provided with a small living stipend and is paid by the Oberlin College. Typically summer programming includes a summer camp for 5-15 local youths as well as regularly scheduled evening repairs.

The Bike Coop provides its volunteers with basic bicycle skills and the tools for organizing greater social change. Mechanics who have volunteered at the Bike Coop have gone on to achieve many great successes, including starting other Bike Coops, founding community organizations and not for profits, and starting bicycle shops. Examples of Oberlin Bike Coop graduates include the Cleveleand Bicycle Cooperative, Sustainable Community Associates, Third Ward Bikes (Houston, TX), the Bike Kitchen (San Francisco, CA) & Box Dog Bikes (San Francisco, CA). Many other mechanics have learned from their volunteer positions and continued on with other non-bicycle youth-oriented work.

As the Bike Coop is largely a student organization, the particulars of its composition and its direction will change year to year. With strong leaders and dedicated volunteers, it is a vital center of knowledge, education, social happenings and fun. Without strong leaders and dedicated volunteers, its nothing but a pile of rusty spokes and deflated tubes.

== History ==

The Third Hand Bicycle Cooperative of Columbus, Ohio was originally formed in 2003, but was slated for hibernation a year later, when its leadership disbanded. The sight of its remnants -abandoned bikes, tools, parts, literature- gave another small group of people little choice but to reform the co-op.

This town needed a community bicycle shop, we decided. It needed a place where people could use tools freely and learn the mechanics of repair, could spend sunny afternoons organizing dusk rides, or volunteer to repair bicycles. So in October of 2005, a few of us began spreading the word that someone had donated their garage for such a purpose. That same few would embark on the organizational challenge of making it a sustainable possibility. We had little idea of what it would demand from us, but also of how it would reward us.

The sight of so many people coming out to help with this project, whether wrenching or organizing, was astonishing. The excitement conducted through most people who came out to the shop in 2006. Our renewed energy to take on the next year was due to the response we got from the people of Columbus.

We found ourselves in winter again, faced with necessity of finding a new shop to work from. And also faced with the challenge of turning a cool idea into a program that works and persists. 2007 was a deciding year for the Third Hand Bicycle Cooperative. As organizers, we found and maintain a facility, and set the programs in motion. As a community, we must hoist this cooperative into a lasting reality and have a place where everyone can access bicycles.

In the fall of 2002 the Ohio City Bicycle Co-op (OCBC) was incorporated, and secured donation of a storefront on Lorain Avenue where it could expand this Earn A Bike program, renovate and sell surplus bikes to help cover expenses, and attract additional volunteers with an adult membership program that offered bike repair classes and shop use to the public. At this time OCBC also began to present Earn A Bike programs at schools and recreation centers as a fee service, and organized larger bike rides as fundraising events and for others, including the City of Cleveland. Being unsuccessful securing start-up grant funding, the organization operated entirely with volunteer labor, primarily from two of the founding members, one of whom began volunteering full-time in the beginning of 2003.

When the building on Lorain Avenue was sold in September 2003, the Co-op moved to its current, larger space in the Flats, where less street traffic greatly facilitated group riding, and a large amount of storage space eased management of the large volume of bicycle donations, now also coming from several area police departments.

In 2005 the OCBC's full-time volunteer director was joined by a new member with extensive computer skills, who automated the membership program's volunteer-credit accounting system, overhauled the website, and began the group's transition from a volunteer co-op to an employee-staffed organization.

The OCBC now has three full-time staff and over 150 adult members, about thirty of whom are regular volunteers, who, in 2006 alone, have rehabilitated more than five hundred bicycles, and diverted from the waste stream about five tons of steel and aluminum.

The Athens bike co-op is a volunteer community organization working out of a 2-car garage in the near East side neighborhood of Athens. Foraged and donated bicycles are refurbished and sold for $25-$125. Some are put into service as a part of AYBiTS, which is a bike sharing program started spring of 2009. Custom bikes are also welded together at the co-op, including choppers, tallbikes, and cargo bikes. We rent 120 bikes to students and staff every semester, making it possible for people to get around Logan. The biggest thing we do is one on one tutorials with any one who needs to fix their bike. We don't fix your bike but we tell you how and are with you every step of the way.
