'''Neighborhood Bike Works''' is a nonprofit educational organization in Philadelphia that seeks to increase opportunities for urban youth in underserved neighborhoods in greater Philadelphia by offering educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities through bicycling; it also promotes cycling as a healthy, affordable, environment-friendly form of transportation. NBW presently operates out of its headquarters located in the Mantua neighborhood of Philadelphia.

== History ==
Started in 1996 as Youth Cycle & Recycle, a program of The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Neighborhood Bike Works incorporated as a non-profit in July 1999. It expanded to the Haddington neighborhood in 2002, and opened the North Philadelphia Neighborhood Shop in 2009. The North Philly shop was also its sales and service location, and operated a fully functioning repair shop. In 2010, the South Philadelphia satellite program opened a location on 5th Street between Lombard and South. Historically, it held programming at four Philadelphia sites, a satellite location in Norristown, PA, and in several public schools and community centers.
== History ==
In 2008, the Bike Root opened in a disused loading dock in the centre of campus. A fully outfitted bicycle lending library was opened soon thereafter.
In the summer of 2010, the Bike Root lost the use of their space on campus. The shop was briefly run out of a shipping container on the edge of campus.
Sometime thereafter, the entire bicycle library (and bike stock) was stolen from Campus.
In 20(??), the Bike Root reopened in the Arts Parkade loading dock one or two days a week and in 2016, the shop hours were expanded by the new board to 5 days a week. The Bike Root maintains open hours 5 days a week as of May, 2016.

* [[DIY Repair Services]]

== Services Offered ==
=== DIY Shop ===
The Bike Root is typically open many days each week (current schedule at http://BikeRoot.ca). We have 6 stands available and a very comprehensive set of tools and speciality tools. There is a good stock of new and used parts for most bikes. Bike part and bicycle donations are accepted at any time during open hours. Membership is $10 annually and can be renewed for a year at any time.

=== Mobile Repair ===
The Bike Root does not regularly offer mobile repair, but often is asked to attend events and demonstrate how to repair attendees bikes. This is usually done in a [[hands-on repair|hands on]] fashion, unless the attendee states that they have the competency to use the tools at hand.

Normally the only small repairs are performed which includes
* pumping up tires
* adjustments to dérailleur and brake limits and barrel adjusters
* size adjustments
* quick cleaning
* lubing of chain.

More complex adjustments and repairs and deemed to risky, in the past we have found ourselves not able to reassemble what we disassembled even when we had much experience with the procedure simply because we did not carry spare parts or more complex tools.

=== Bicycle Valet ===
Since the summer of 2010, the Bike Root has been offering a regular bicycle valet service to our local farmers' market in [[wikipedia:Hillhurst, Calgary|Hillhurst-Sunnyside]]. Normally two volunteers are at hand to serve those with bikes entering the market. The service is by donation and normally brings in approximately $20-$30 a week.

We own 3 portable and collapsible high quality aluminium bike racks. Normally a tent is erected to shelter the volunteers from the sun or rain and the area is roped off to discourage people from entering.

A tagging system is used to mark the bikes. Large tags or varying colours and with varying images were made in duplicate, laminated and small clips were attached to each. The volunteer will take the client's bike, clip a tag to the bike and give the client the duplicate. The system work much in the same way as does a coat check.

=== Group Rides ===
Infrequently the Bike Root offers group rides.

=== Former Services Offered ===
In the summer of 2010, the Bike Root lost the use of their space on campus. At that time the following additional services were offered

== Services Offered ==
=== DIY Shop ===

=== Mobile Repair ===

* pumping up tires
* adjustments to dérailleur and brake limits and barrel adjusters
* size adjustments
* quick cleaning
* lubing of chain.

More complex adjustments and repairs and deemed to risky, in the past we have found ourselves not able to reassemble what we disassembled even when we had much experience with the procedure simply because we did not carry spare parts or more complex tools.

=== Bicycle Valet ===

=== Group Rides ===
Infrequently the Bike Root offers group rides.

=== Former Services Offered ===
In the summer of 2010, the Bike Root lost the use of their space on campus. At that time the following additional services were offered

Eugene has volunteered as a Bike Church Facilitator for [[Neighborhood Bike Works|NBW's]] [[Women and Trans Programs|Women and Trans Nights]] since Spring 2014. This was a natural fit as they are driven to find solutions for egalitarian access to transportation resources for all, regardless of gender. They joined [[Neighborhood Bike Works]] as a staff mechanic in 2015 and are excited to bring their knowledge and love to help out in the various [[Category:Philadelphia, PA Community Bicycle Organizations|Philly]] neighborhoods.
==Background in Wikis==
Eugene started editing wikis in High School starting with their own High School's wiki in 2001.

They experienced a resurgence in wiki interest in 2006 when a popular internet game utilized [[wikipedia:mediawiki|mediawiki]] software as a means of communicating. A small project of theirs failed due to politics on Wikipedia, but still their passion remained strong.

They utilized that knowledge and passion to benefit the wiki belonging to their hometown of Rochester, NY for several years.

Now they hope to serve the global cycling community by cleaning up edits and contributing to Philly and Gender Inclusive pages around this wonderful wiki.
===If you need ideas===

Some of the broken links on our wiki are things that would be better suited as external links to Sheldon Brown or Park Tool or Pedros -OR- you could do a mixed-media link to Wikipedia!

Example: <nowiki> [[Wikipedia:Bicycles|(bikes)]] </nowiki> should produce [[Wikipedia:Bicycles|(bikes)]] !!

You can also post whatever information you think is relevant and useful. Make your first edit, start a new article, or edit an [https://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:AllPages existing article].
That makes February a great time to show some love for the Bike Collectives Wiki! This contest was also inspired by an email on the [http://www.bikecollectives.org/#think-tank-register Think Tank] in which somebody pointed out that the amazing resource that is the community bike shops list page was out of date.
I'll likely fix your formatting for you if you don't mind, but here's a few simple ways to keep the conversations easy to read!
#give our discussion a title. put four equals signs on either side of said title to make it stand out.
#if your comment is in reply to one of mine, add a colon to the beginning for every level of nested conversation
#add a signature to your comment by leaving <nowiki>--~~~~</nowiki> at the end!
#click on the "edit" button at the top of this page to "view the source" and see what I'm talking about!
::Angel! Thanks so much! I hope to have a lot of fun working with everyone. I've been developing on WikiMedia since the mid-aughts (2006, methinks) and I've been a Bike Mechanic my whole life. I'm hoping to improve the [[Women and Trans Programs]] page specifically! That sort of programming has been the focus of my life's work in the last few years, and I'd like to centralize a lot of data therein. -- [[User:Eugene|Eugene]] ([[User talk:Eugene|talk]]) 11:49, 30 January 2016 (PST)
Eugene! I didn't feel comfortable opening the main page up without checking with people who understand wikis better than me, but I made you an administrator, so you can totally change both the main page and the permissions on the main page if you want to. Thanks so much for wikiing! Also, thanks for inspiring me to seed my user page. --[[User:Angel|aNGEL yORK]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 11:25, 14 February 2016 (PST)
:P.S. Before we had a million spam bots signing up, you didn't used to need to get approved by anyone to have an account. Which is why I didn't have a page automatically created for me when I signed up. --[[User:Angel|aNGEL yORK]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 11:27, 14 February 2016 (PST)
What happens if I check the "bot" privilege box? Does that turn you into a bot? I can check it if you want. I contacted Godwin because I'd expect that he'll either know about that bug or will know who will. He's the one who does the bikecollectives.org website. Thank you for all the work you've been doing on the wiki! --[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 14:52, 15 February 2016 (PST)
::Eugene! I was going to leave a comment in the patriarchy page but I wasn't sure if you'd see it there and you're probably the only one who would be looking right now. I left a comment on the W&T programs page that included the following paragraph:
Even if every single moment in a bike collective was filled with people striving toward a safer space as best they could, there would still be a need for WTF night because the people who show up couldn't be expected to know that. Until I understood that, I spent a long time feeling uncomfortable about the concept of WTF nights because I believed (and continue to believe, actually) that it puts the burden of the work of thinking about issues surrounding equality largely on the hosts of the WTF nights, and then the rest of the collective often only thinks about safer spaces at their convenience, when I'd rather see every single member of a collective taking that burden on together and making every moment as much of a safer space as WTF nights.
::I have usually basically been the only cis woman at my collectives who hasn't devoted energy to women and trans nights at some point. (I say that, but I'm positive I've thought about it a lot more than a lot of men at those same bike collectives, plus I can visit.) Not because they're not valuable, which they certainly are, but because I felt the need to focus on the other shifts. I wasn't always able to articulate my qualms, but they're basically summarized by my quote above. I feel that the wiki entry on patriarchy could use a little more balance as it expands. Which is to say! Basically I would really really love to have an ongoing conversation! In which we talk about these things and maybe see if we can even figure out ways to move beyond the W&T/etc mold. I know not all collectives or all people at all collectives are ready for this. My first collective was in a college town and was having 201-level conversations about this sort of thing, and the one here in Portland was mostly (with at least one exception) still getting to the point where they were starting to have 101-level conversations when I left last year. Which is to say, I'm looking forward to hearing more about the successes and failures of the wtf/etc nights (and moving beyond patriarchy the rest of the time, too) that you've been a part of, because I know it doesn't work the same way everywhere and I'm looking forward to an ongoing discussion, if you're interested.--[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 19:19, 19 February 2016 (PST)
Oh hey thought this might interest you. I noticed it was a popular page. [https://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Contribute_to_this_Wiki https://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Contribute_to_this_Wiki] --[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 20:10, 25 February 2016 (PST)
Hi Eugene! I wanted to add some sort of racial diversity page and then in a flurry of edits I moved a bunch of things around because I wanted a safer spaces page since I think that's bigger than just women & trans. It was a lot of juggling, and you know how it goes when you've been staring at things too much and they all just sort of blur together? So hopefully the safer space, patriarchy and bicycle repair, and women & trans programs pages are all more or less still making sense.--[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 20:26, 29 February 2016 (PST)
====comments sections on pages====
Hi Eugene! I should start by saying thanks for moving my bullet points to the patriarchy page! I was pleased that you thought it was useful there. I'm writing because I want to talk about comments sections. I'm used to contributing to a wiki that has "comments" sections at the end of any wiki page where people want to leave a public comment, and coming from that background, I see the "talk" section as more of a back and forth area for talking about the nuts and bolts of any given page. It has been fun having slightly less public conversations in the user talk section, but I did actually intentionally intend for my comment (the one that got moved from W&T to W&T talk) to be left in a comments section of the W&T programs page. I figure we are coming from different wiki standards but we get to figure out how we want to do it here, so I'm thinking about this from the perspective of what I think would be most useful for the bike collectives wiki. I see the wiki as a collaboration of people who care about bike collectives and share relevant experiences and knowledge with other people who care about bike collectives. Thinking about this from that perspective, I see a place for public comments sections. I didn't want to put the comment section back without seeing how you felt. Do you have strong feelings on this, or was it an impulse to standardize? Having seen it in action, I see a lot of value in having public comments sections, so I'm hoping that it was an impulse to standardize, but if you do have a strong preference, I'd love to hear more. --[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 13:05, 25 February 2016 (PST)
::my feelings are that it depends on the type of page/wiki to determine how useful versus cluttered the page would look with a comments section. For pages on something like Davis Wiki or Rocwiki, it makes sense to have a comments section, since the general public likes to leave commentary, yelp-style. For something more encyclopedic it doesn't make as much sense as there isn't room for opinion. I think that it would be perfectly reasonable for you to have, instead of providing commentary, to integrate your input into either of the two pages, rather than having a separate section. It's also such that the wiki has very few users, so our comments sections would just be us talking anyway.
::I hope my answer is helpful. I'm not really that concerned about it, and can see the value in a comments section, I'm just also almost always sure that the talk page is just fine for that purpose. --[[User:Eugene|Eugene]] ([[User talk:Eugene|talk]]) 14:41, 25 February 2016 (PST)
:::I'm a little confused. Is the concern that it would look cluttered or would there be very few comments?
:::I would prefer to make my post as a comment - though I'm ok if others copy parts into the more formal sections of pages - because I don't necessarily want to frame myself as an the expert on the topic. I'm not. I actually wonder, now that I'm thinking about it, if this is part of why Wikipedia is skewed so far male, is because people socialized as male may be more willing to take on that role of stating things as facts rather than as conversation. I went and looked my theory up, and based on [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_bias_on_Wikipedia#Causes this article] it looks like it has some merit and after reading their list, I'm more convinced that using in-page comment sections can serve as a potential path to bring the voices of more women into encyclopedic-style wikis. It worked for me. --[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 19:52, 25 February 2016 (PST)
:::: I seem to have gotten excited after finding that link and wandered off into philosophy land and forgot to come back. I'm glad it sounds like it's no big deal, yay. Is it cool with you if I put that particular comment section back? I think it might be one where comments trickle in over the years if we're lucky, anyway. --[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 19:56, 25 February 2016 (PST)
::::: I'd say go for it! All of what you say makes sense, for sure. There *should* be a way to add a comment box to wiki pages. I wonder if I can dig something up. --[[User:Eugene|Eugene]] ([[User talk:Eugene|talk]]) 19:07, 29 February 2016 (PST)
==== want to write an intro to a book? ====
Hi Eugene - I know, I'm a slacker, I haven't updated you as the winner of the february contest and sent out that chocolate bar yet. I may have spent more time keeping it on my to-do list than it would have taken to actually do, but there's still a chocolate bar here with your name on it! And hey, I just found your address, so I'm one step closer! ps, I'll try to be less perfunct, more active in the wiki contest next year! I didn't really give you much competition this year. Next year! Anyway, I'm writing because I was just chatting with Elly Blue of microcosm publishing today, and she's looking for someone to write a one-page intro to the latest edition of Chainbreaker and asked if I knew anyone, and of course I thought of you:

Hi Angel,
Like we talked about today, we're looking for someone who'd be into writing 2-4 paragraphs (about a page) about what are WTF movements and safer spaces in bike projects, and a little bit about issues these projects are grappling with around them. For the new edition of the Chainbreaker Bike Book.
Would you pass this along to your cohort?
Thanks,
Elly
====comments sections on pages====
:::: Do not worry about that error message. Wikimedia was updated on October 16 to 1.24 by an unknown user, most likely, an automated action at Dreamhost. The Skin autodiscovery mechanism is no long used to load default skins, and it produces this error. At the time, I had to go into the database to fix blockbuster issues that prevented users from logging into the website. This required adding new columns that did not exist in the database after the update. The database is very large, so there must have been a failure during the update. Updates should never be performed before the database has been backed-up, however, this was not the procedure used. Anyways, everything appears to be working properly. ''"How do we keep our comrades safest?"'' I think that at times it's best to gather our power and have secret cabals and to come up with secret language. I think that you are also doing very important work, both of recon and also of spreading the good word of "be a goddamn decent human being". I honestly don't believe that one can exist without the other. I think that keeping our most vulnerable away from the things that make them hurt is important work. I also think educating the ones doing the harm is important work as well. I'll tell you about this cool kid at our community open shop the next time I get access to the internet. --[[User:Eugene|Eugene]] ([[User talk:Eugene|talk]]) 21:06, 20 February 2016 (PST)
==== Re winning editing award====

Not sure if this is a talk page or just a how to use a talk page. thats how non tech I am. I am going to ask a friend to help me as I can't seem to create a page with the right category links as I just edited parrot fashion from previous posts' and don't even get what a nested conversation is
Anyway Angel thanks for the award even though this is 3 months later. Please give the chocolate bar to someone you see at your community bike shop who looks like they need it. Sending one to Australia seems somehow wrong.
If this is the right page please reply and I will ask you further questions -- [[User:Recumbent Rider|Recumbent Rider]] ([[User talk:Recumbent Rider|talk]]) 05:28, 11 June 2016 (PDT)
:I'll do that, Recumbent Rider! Here's the chocolate bar someone will be getting in your name: [https://www.theochocolate.com/product/19]
:This is a talk page, I just talk a lot. When I was sitting here trying to think of who would need a chocolate bar, I realized that would be someone in some sort of "needs sugar" shock. Which reminds me, did you know? I like to keep chocolate in emergency kits. It comes in handy!
:Anyway, this is the right page, feel free to ask me further questions! --[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 07:33, 11 June 2016 (PDT)
====Help Using Talk Pages====
Here's a few simple ways to keep the conversations easy to read!
#give our discussion a title. put four equals signs on either side of said title to make it stand out.
#if your comment is in reply to one of mine, add a colon to the beginning for every level of nested conversation
#add ''your username (your talk page) and time stamp'' to your comment by leaving''' <nowiki>--~~~~</nowiki> ''' at the end!
#click on the "edit" button at the top of this page to "view the source" and see what I'm talking about!
#DON'T BE SHY! I love making new wiki friends.
Howdy! Are you a human or a bot? My first encounter with you was on my Talk page (linked in my signature) You seem to be doing a whole lot of work on the wiki and I just wanted to say thanks, either way. If you're a bot, I'd love to make you a User Page. If you're a human, I might do the same. Pleased to make your internet acquaintance. --[[User:Eugene|Eugene]] ([[User talk:Eugene|talk]]) 07:04, 14 February 2016 (PST)
::I have a concern about some busted code in the database. I get this message when I try to add certain templates. Who actually owns the server space? See below error message. --[[User:Eugene|Eugene]] ([[User talk:Eugene|talk]]) 11:31, 15 February 2016 (PST)
<nowiki>Notice: Uncommitted DB writes (transaction from DatabaseBase::query (LinkBatch::doQuery (for Skin::preloadExistence))). in /home/richiepp/bikecollectives.org/wiki/includes/db/Database.php on line 4266</nowiki>

I would consider moving the wiki to one of my servers if the hosting costs would be covered. --[[User:PositiveSpin|PositiveSpin]] ([[User talk:PositiveSpin|talk]]) 23:14, 15 February 2016 (PST)

::::: Thanks for answering that question, PositiveSpin! I think someone made an agreement with the Alliance for Biking and Walking at some point that they'd pay for our hosting, but in January I went and visited the site and noticed it was down, and it turns out it was because they hadn't paid the bill, so Godwin just paid it. Godwin and Momoko cleared out thousands of spambot users a couple years ago and revamped the website entirely. If you want details of recent bikecollectives & bikebike web development history, do a search for godwin in the think tank archives. He's not the only person who does the tech stuff, but it's a good search term. He's redoing the website part in Ruby right now and it's going to be up in a couple weeks, actually. --[[User:Angel|Angel York]] ([[User talk:Angel|talk]]) 23:49, 15 February 2016 (PST)
